Why choose a shadowbox fence?

Shadowbox fencing solves a common backyard problem: you want enclosure and a clean property line, but you also want the fence to look good from every angle and stand up to Northwest Arkansas weather. Alternating pickets on each side of the rail create privacy without turning your yard into a solid wall.

The staggered layout lets air move through the panel, which relieves wind pressure during storms and keeps the fence from acting like a sail. That same spacing gives you a finished appearance on both sides, so shared lines with neighbors stay visually balanced.

Material and post options

Shadowbox fences use the same structural frame as other wood privacy styles. Your picket and post choices determine how the fence weathers, how much maintenance you will plan for, and how the alternating pattern reads from both sides of the line.

Pressure-treated pine

Pine pickets on a pressure-treated frame are a practical starting point for shadowbox when you need a well-built fence without the upfront investment of cedar or redwood. Upgrading pickets to cedar, adding cedar rails, or switching to steel posts can extend the life of a pine shadowbox significantly.

Cedar and redwood pickets

Cedar offers natural rot and insect resistance with a warm, consistent grain; redwood adds a distinctive color and a premium finished look. Both hold up in NWA humidity and sun, and we use stainless steel ring-shank nails on cedar and redwood shadowbox builds to avoid the dark streaks galvanized fasteners can leave over time.

Steel posts and gate frames

Wood posts in contact with soil eventually deteriorate; steel posts do not and help shadowbox panels stay straight when wind pushes through the gaps. Galvanized or steel gate frames are a smart upgrade for drive entries that see daily use. Black metal hinges, brackets, and latches are also available for a cohesive look on cedar shadowbox fences.

Gates built to match your fence

Our gates are custom built to match your fence, not a separate piece tacked on at the end.

Standard swinging gates. Single and double gates with pickets aligned to the fence run, plus hardware chosen for daily use and security needs.

Custom wood gates. Built to your width and height, including stepped pickets when grade changes between yards and customizable metal hardware to complement your wood finishes.

Metal gate frame options. A steel frame gate prevents sagging over time, prolonging the life of your gate. This pairs well with steel hinge posts.

Current scheduling usually runs about two to three weeks from approval to start, depending on season and project size. We keep communication direct so you know when we are on site.

What homeowners say about our work

"Great communications with the owner; willingness to customize our fence. High quality materials, including hidden metal posts; the crew showed up as scheduled and completed the job quickly; they cleaned up the job site, and did a great job building a small custom fence for our gravel dog yard, just based off of a couple of online pictures. We are planning on having Landscape Earth Fence redo the other two sides of our backyard fence, to correct poor materials and construction methods from a previous contractor."

— Pete C.

"This company is awesome! They worked with 6 total homeowners to put in 6ft shared cedar fencing. They were very fast in removing old fencing, correcting some placement issues to make our yards easier to mow, and installing the new fencing. I love my new fence and have had multiple compliments from people in our neighborhood. I would highly recommend this company!"

— Kim O.

"We had an incredible experience working with Landscape Earth Fence! All my questions were answered very quickly and thoroughly. They had our whole fence done in 2 days. Also very happy we went with the metal gate frame. It's extremely sturdy and I think will save lots of maintenance in the future! Clint was extremely helpful, was always available and easy to get on the phone to discuss details of the project!"

— Chris B.
